Fujiseiki's Food Loss Reduction Initiatives

Supporting Food Infrastructure Through Circular Manufacturing

Globally, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food that is still fit for consumption are discarded each year. At the same time, many people are unable to secure sufficient daily meals, creating a serious global imbalance. Reducing food waste has become one of the highest global priorities, which at Fujiseiki, we take very seriously as a company directly involved in the food production and processing industry. Fujiseiki recognizes the challenges in fighting this imbalance and is committed to reducing food-loss and improving access to food resources through company policy and corporate social responsibility initiatives. To pass on our limited resources to future generations and help realize a more sustainable and equitable society, we strive to implement sustainability initiatives at all levels of our business actvities, valuing every single grain of rice.

The pursuit of precision must not lead to waste.

At Fujiseiki, we work every day to develop and fine-tune our onigiri machines so that we can deliver delicious onigiri to people around the world. In order to deliver the ideal "fluffiness" and superior quality machining precision to our customers, live testing involving the use of actual cooked rice is unavoidable. Historically, the rice used in testing and fine-tuning was discarded after use, despite being of high quality and perfectly safe for human consumption. To address this immense waste, we explored new and innovative ways to reuse and repurpose this valuable resource. Today, Fujiseiki is proud to have achieved a reuse rate of over 90% for the rice used in machine testing through our sustainablity initiatives, some of which are listed below.

Shochu
April 2009–

Transforming rice to aromatic "shochu"

Through joint research with Fukuoka Agricultural High School (Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture) and the sake brewery "Shinozaki" (Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture), we developed "Steamed Rice Shochu" using the "rice" from our machine testing. It features a fruity, well-rounded flavor.

Animal Feed
2023–

Turning every grain of rice into nourishment for new life

We provide Fujiseiki's test rice as a raw material for "Kirara Meal," an eco-friendly feed manufactured by Earth Creative Co., Ltd. (Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). Kirara Meal is used as feed for pigs and chickens by feed manufacturers.

Fujiseiki's New Challenge

We are currently developing craft beer made using test rice.

Our Commitment: "Every Grain Used in Testing Is Precious Food"

Uncompromising machines, zero food waste production.

At Fujiseiki, in our decades long pursuit of the ideal rice ball, we have been faced with the ongoing challenge of tens of tons of post-test rice annually. Although we are proud of having achieved a reuse rate of 90% though repurposing into "shochu" and "animal feed," we believe the challenge is not yet over. As a company, we are committed to reducing the remaining 10% to zero, achieving a total reuse rate with no food waste. We believe this is our duty as a manufacturer supporting the food processing indusrty, and a way of showing respect for the value of food.

"Every single grain from our tests is precious food."

With this fundamental principle in mind, we are dedicated to further accelerating technological innovation and regional collaboration, striving to achieve a 100% reduction in food waste. We believe that the evolution of both rice balls and the underlying supporting technology can help lead to a more sustainable future.
